Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Reading: Matthew 6:16-18 & 2 Peter 2:9-11
Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV)
16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV)
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You've called us to Yourself through fasting. Lord, help me to be faithful to the type of fasting that You envision. Lord, keep me from false humility while allowing me to enter fully into the new identity that You have given me as a royal priest through Jesus. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
